Annual Awards 2026 Nomination
Celebrating the Good, Recognising Improvement and Bringing Attention to the Bad
Although the ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Awards’ have always been well supported, it has been agreed that it is time for a refresh and a slight change of emphasis. The reference to The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is not fully understood and we feel the title gives too much weight to the Bad/Ugly categories. There is also no real definition of what should be included in Bad/Ugly and of late we have combined these into a single category.
We have therefore retained the Good and Bad categories, deleted Ugly but added a category to recognise where Improvements have been made.
Our aims for the awards remain the same:
- To recognise progress and change over the past twelve months.
- To encourage high standards in the built environment (urban and rural)
- To recognise achievements that may not feature in a more formal award scheme.
- To recognise the work of local individuals, and
- To promote the Chester Civic Trust in the wider community.
So, how do you feel about the things that have changed in and around Chester over the past twelve months?

WHAT WE WANT TO ACHIEVE
With your help we want to:
- recognise progress and change over the past twelve months
- encourage high standards in the built environment (urban and rural)
- recognise achievements that may not feature in a more formal awards scheme
- recognise the work of local individuals, and
- promote the Chester Civic Trust in the wider community
CATEGORIES
Together with the more obvious categories of “new buildings” and “the renovation of existing buildings” we will include:
- new buildings
- renovation of existing buildings
- shopfronts
- signage
- public art
- street furniture
- lighting
- maintenance & cleanliness
- safety & security
- parks
- gardens & cemeteries
- Play Areas
- other publicly accessible spaces
- campaigns
- heritage initiatives
- leisure facilities: culture, sport, etc.
- roads, paving and hard landscape
- publicly accessible interiors
- environmental/climate change initiatives
These categories are not mutually exclusive: in some cases they may overlap one with another. At this stage we are however ruling out ephemeral matters such as temporary shop window displays. We are also ruling out inaccessible interior design as being a little outside our area of interest, important as it is.
